Sunday Afternoon Sermon 2009 0118

Passage: Exodus 19:1-8
Title: We will do it…

1 On the third new moon after the people of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. 2 They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain, 3 while Moses went up to God. The LORD called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 4 You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.” 7 So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him. 8 All the people answered together and said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the LORD.

Summary of the sermon:
- God saved Israel (us) from their slavery in Egypt (from slavery to sin).
- God reminded them of what he has done in their lives, how he saved them.
- God called for their obedience in covenant with God, to be God’s holy nation, royal priesthood.
- They all said they will obey God. But in later history we see that they all failed, except Caleb and Joshua.
- Caleb and Joshua point forward to the only true Israelite that was coming, namely Jesus Christ. Everyone turned their backs on God while Jesus remained faithful and obedient to the point of death. God rewarded him wither eternal resurrection life.
- How about us? Do we not break our promise with God all the time? Aren’t we like the disobedient Israelites?
- That’s why Christ came. He came and fulfilled the covenant for us so that whosoever calls on the name of the Lord may be saved and changed and empowered by the Holy Spirit to obey God and live as his holy nation of priests.
- Jesus calls us to believe in him and receive eternal life and obey God in Christ. Will you follow that call?

10/12/08 | Sermon: Jesus, Tempted?

Speaker: Pastor Dong Woo

Luke 4: 1-13

  • How would you like a genuis to ace all your school’s tests for you? (now accepting offers; $10/test)
  • Prior to His temptation, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert without food; the amazing thing is that Jesus as a human was physically susceptible to the desires that we all as humans had meaning he was just as hungry as we would be, just as tired as us, and just as weak
  • The key thing is, Jesus had the holy spirit with him and thus was able to resist the temptations of Satan; Jesus was the one that took the test for us

Application Points

  • WE HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT! We are fully capable of resisting temptation as Jesus did; we have no excuse for our stumbling. If you find it hard to keep from falling into sin, just imagine how hard it must have been for Jesus, who even as a human remained sinless all his life.
  • Just as Jesus said “Man shall not live on bread alone,” we need the Word of God to thrive. Sooo, GET TO WORSHIP WHEN ITS TIME AND STOP EATING WHEN THE CLOCK HITS 1:15

Any questions or comments for Pastor DW, post here.

8/24/08 | Sermon: Who has heard?

Speaker: Pastor Dong Woo Kim

Romans 10: 14-21

  • For one to call upon the name of God, one must believe in Him which is not possible without preachers and speakers. We cannot ourselves follow Jesus Christ because of our wretched nature and thus, we need divine intervention to bring us to God, but this is another semon topic probably.
  • The gospel has been spread everywhere and there is no excuse then not to believe
  • Because Israel, God’s chosen nation, had taken the Word and God for granted, God made other nations and peoples believe in Him to bring out Israel’s jelousy

Application Points

  • Israel in the time of the passage is somewhat representative of our church; we have abundant access to the gospel with sermons, praise, and worship week in and week out. We must be careful not to take God for granted.
  • In that sense, we should also not act brazenly; to truly be thankful of the Word, we must also treat our brothers and sisters with respect and truly make an effort to change our attitudes through Jesus

Pastor DW, if there was something I misunderstood or something you want to add/change/remove, feel free to do so.

For anyone else, post questions and misc in the comments section of this post.

Updates and News

We’re back from the PCA retreat and boy what a retreat it was. If I may speak for the youth group, this year’s retreat was extremely satisfying and enlightening. The theme was Limited Atonement, the third point of Calvinist doctrine in TULIP. Through Jesus Christ and his sacrifice, the sins of the elect were forgiven and Christ’s righteousness was given to us so that no matter how many times we may sin afterwards, we are no longer subject to God’s wrath. Thanks to the speaker Paul S. Jeon for these clear and helpful messages, the staff for facilitating the retreat, Pastor Dong Woo for doing all the paperwork and putting up with us there, everyone from our church that made it so fun, and most importantly God to Whom no amount of thanks will suffice for all He’s done for us.

In other news, you might notice the new look of the site. I guess I got tired of the other theme and how it glitched on Internet Explorer. I’m continuing to work on the site and right now, I’m finalizing some of the design work for other parts of the site. Today, I got done the new title page which isn’t flash anymore but honestly I think looks pretty good. You can see it at http://youth.cornerstone-pc.com

Other things to come, I’m working on the photo gallery and maybe making a light message board for misc stuff. Subscribe by email if you haven’t already to get your updates in your inbox! Just click the green button up top and type in your email address, then click the confirmation link they send.

Of course, if you guys don’t check your email either, theres no way I can get you guys to read the updates short from hitting you on the head with a club and reading them to you.

Oh by the way, make sure you come to church tomorrow by 1 PM for PCA. Make sure you have your clothes and toiletries in hand but more importantly, bring your Bibles and 105 dollars. Even if you forget everything else, bring your Bible and your fee. You can deal without the rest. ;)

Eat lunch before you come; we’re not going to feed you.
